Cat8 is currently being developed to support a new 40GBase-T standard over short distances. It is initially targeted specifically for Data Centres, allowing Servers to link to Access layer network.
40GBase-T will be supported through up to 30m of cable and through 2 connectors. This compares with lower categories of cable providing ethernet support for 100m of cable and through 4 connectors.
The Cat8 will be 4-pair shielded, rated at 2GHz.
More than one connector type will be supported, the RJ45 (this standard known as Cat8.1) or Tera/GG-45 used with Cat7/7a (this standard know as Cat8.2).
